Where
can I learn more about Labradors before I adopt one?
An
excellent description (including history, temperment, and
common health problems) can be viewed here.
A
much less detailed description, but one that compares Lab
characteristics with other breeds on a 5-point scale, is available
at Animal
Planet.
Do
you only rescue Labs?
No, but we do prefer to specialize in the Labrador and Golden
Retriever breeds, and mixes that meet the breed standard of
appearance and temperment as closely as possible. Each dog
we rescue is evaluated on it's own merit. In the past we have
rescued and rehabilitated non-Lab breeds and mixes. For information
about Goldens, click
here.
Is
there a fee to adopt?
Yes, but the fee reflects the actual cost of caring for the
animal. There is no profit margin. Most dogs we rescue require
some veterinary treatment. The costs vary with each animal
but generally include the 5-in-1 vaccine, Rabies vaccine,
and spaying or neutering. Some negected animals require more
extensive treatment and medication. When you add this to daily
care and feeding, basic obedience training, and transportation
costs for animals rescued outside of Indianapolis (and even
out of state, in some cases), the fee is very low. It is certainly
a better value than any pet store, and on par with other rescue
organizations (typically $50-$150 for dogs requiring basic
shots, training, and spay/neuter).
Can
I get help or advice from you after the adoption?
Yes. Our goal is for your new pet to live a happy life as
a member of your family. We do recommend enrolling your pet
in an advanced obedience course, but if you need other assistance
with a behavior problem or have questions about Labs, write
us.
